Project aim

The aim of this project is to evaluate how effective using satellite data, Big Data analytics and battery energy storage systems is to optimise smart grid performance and management system.

Concept & Business Definition

I-EM SAT & ZapGo, under the sponsorship of STFC via the Harwell Cross-Cluster group initiative, are worked on a proof-of-concept (PoC) project that looked to model ZapGo’s C-Ion technology as an energy storage device with I-EM SAT’s Earth Observation(EO) data to provide additional functionality and efficiency to Harwell’s microgrid.

Smart grid management

The Smart grid is a core component within the system that delivers an electricity network that can intelligently communicate between the utility and its customers. The smart grid uses real-time  monitoring  to  adapt  and  tune  itself  for  an  ideal  performance  even  during  peak  hours.

Regarding safety features, it can isolate part of the electrical network system that are in risk of failure.

The smart grid in HARGRID project should have the following incorporated:

  • Asset control in a complex microgrid environment.
  • All information in one place.
  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) user-friendly app & service platform-based portal
  • Where  notifications  provide  predicted  and  actual  faults.    KPIs  for  info  such  as performance  ratio  (important  for  contractual  capability  monitoring),  fault  identification and fixing.
  • Diagnostics to compare predicted vs. actual to assess ems performance.
